CFB doles out matching funds to Council candidates

By Tom Momberg

Five of the candidates running for the City Council seat vacated by Mark Weprin earlier this year have been awarded $95,000 from the city Campaign Finance Board’s matching funds program.

Candidates Bob Friedrich and Satnam Parhar had received initial disbursements from the matching funds program, which awards candidates $6 for every $1 they raise from private city residents, but the CFB announced the additional funds on Thursday.

Candidates Rebecca Lynch, Ali Najmi and Barry Grodenchik were also each awarded $95,000 from the matching funds program, which are partial disbursements following each candidate’s 32-day pre-election campaign finance reports.

The public funds have now put Lynch and Najmi in the lead for top campaign spenders. Lynch has raised about $78,900 in private funds and Najmi has raised about $75,300, according to the CFB.
