By Bill Parry

The popular Shake Shack burger chain opened its first stand-alone location in the borough last Wednesday at the Queens Center mall in Elmhurst. The company operates licensed Shacks at Citi Field and LaGuardia Airport that do not have designated seating..

In addition to its famous 100 percent all-natural Angus beef Shakeburgers, the Queens Center Shack features frozen custards, specialty concrete shakes, hot dogs and crinkle-cut fries, the restaurant also offers such local beers as Queens Lager. Five percent of the profits from some desserts will by donated to Play4Autism, a Middle Village-based organization.

“Shake Shack is all about community and as we continue to grow and expand, it only made sense to offer a spot for the Queens community toenjoy good food and company,” a spokeswoman said.

The company, owned by Danny Meyer, first opened in Madison Square Park in 2004. It has since expanded internationally to the United Kingdom, Russia, Dubai and Japan.

“We’re pleased to have a great new food choice and it’s a wonderful addition to our mall,” Queens Center Senior Manager of Marketing John Scaturro said. “Our visitors are very familiar with the Shake Shack name and there have been lines ever since it opened.”
