The 104th Precinct is beefing up efforts to reduce the recent uptick in car break-ins seen in Ridgewood and parts of Maspeth.

As of Wednesday, Feb. 3, there have been at least 25 thefts from vehicles within the 104th Precinct in 2016, the precinct reported. Some of those vehicles had their windows broken, while some owners may have left their car doors unlocked.

Items that were stolen from the cars include cash, iPods and iPads, cellphones, GPS devices and even clothing. The 104th Precinct encourages all residents to lock their vehicle doors and to not leave items of value inside their vehicles.

“Many of these break-ins are crimes of opportunity,” said an officer familiar with the situation. “Especially if a criminal sees something of value sitting inside the vehicle.”

The 104th Precinct announced that it has increased marked patrols and unmarked patrols in the areas where these thefts have occurred. In addition, the 104th Detective Squad is actively investigating these thefts from vehicles.

Anyone with information regarding these thefts, or any others, should call the 104th Precinct at 718-386-3004.
