In Motion Dance Center of NY has tapped, jazzed and hip-hopped its way to be a five-time winner of Best of the Boro as “Best Children’s Dance Studio” and “Best Adult Dance Studio.”
So what’s the secret to its success?
“Having the right staff, knowing what parents want, great customer service and listening to patrons,” according to owner Phyllis Delgrosso.
Now in its sixth year, and with more than 400 students, In Motion Dance Center of NY has been crowned the “Best of the Boro” every year since the contest’s inception.
“I definitely see an increase in my client base,” Delgrosso said. “It has helped us and given us notoriety.”
Delgrosso, is a nonverbal psychotherapist with a background in dance, explained that In Motion Dance Center of NY began in 2011 in a local church basement as a social skills group for children with special needs.
With over 20 years of teaching experience, she opened because “I love the arts, teaching, and I enjoyed providing services to children with special needs. I thought, ‘What a great way for all students to benefit through dance.’”
Now located in a 7,000-square-foot facility in the Whitepoint Shopping Center in College Point, In Motion Dance Center of NY serves children and adults from as far away as Staten Island, Brooklyn and the Bronx.
“Everyone needs an outlet and a form of creativity,” she explained. “Dance is a great way to socialize.”
And with an expert staff, Delgrosso has seen the results firsthand.
So what does she think about this year’s Best of the Boro, with nominations open through Aug. 5?
“I do think winning ‘Best of the Boro’ has helped me,” she said. “I would love to continue my winning streak.”
