A manhole fire that occurred at 11:28 p.m. in Astoria last night has left more than 100 Con Edison customers without power.

According to Bob McGee, spokesperson for Con Edison, the manhole fire caused a number of cables to burn resulting in loss of power. Houses on 44th Street from 34th Avenue to Broadway in Astoria have no power, he said.

Con Edison had difficulty moving cars off the streets to repair the cables and worked with the city and OEM to move them.

“We have crews out there working on this,” McGee said. “They are replacing the defective sections of cable.”

There were no injuries or property damage as a result of the fire and McGee said the company expects that power will be restored by mid-afternoon.
