Cops are searching for a crook who used a layaway claim to steal away some jewelry from a Jamaica store earlier this month.
According to police, the bandit walked into the Golden City Jewelers located at 159-23 Jamaica Ave. at 2:40 p.m. on March 17 and approached a 56-year-old male worker.
Law enforcement sources said the suspect told the worker that he had an item on layaway. When the clerk went to the back of the store to find the item, police noted, the bandit reached over the counter and removed six gold bracelets from the display case. He then fled the scene westbound along Jamaica Avenue.
The theft was later reported to the 103rd Precinct.
Police described the jewelry thief as a black man believed to be 20 years of age, standing 5 foot 8 inches tall who was last seen wearing a dark colored jacket, black pants and black-and-white sneakers while carrying a light-colored backpack.
