Keeping with their vow to never forget any who fought for their country, the Queens County American Legion Committee will once again serve one of their brother in arms this week.
The organization will provide a proper military service for an indigent veteran in Glendale, followed by a military burial at Calverton National Cemetery on Wednesday morning, April 12. They will hold a service for Edward Knapp, who left behind no family or friends after he died, at George Werst Funeral Home on Cooper Avenue.
According to Paul J. Schottenhamel, adjutant of Queens County American Legion Unclaimed Veteran Burial Committee, not much is known about Knapp. He was born on Dec. 31, 1937. He served in the U.S. Navy from Aug. 2, 1955 to Aug. 19, 1959. He died in Queens on Dec. 30, 2016.
Following the service in Glendale, the Queens County American Legion Committee — with a motorcycle escort from the Patriot Guard Riders — will transport Knapp to Calverton National Cemetery, in Calverton, NY, for a proper military burial at approximately 11:15 a.m.
Last month, the Queens County American Legion Committee held funeral and burial services for a pair of indigent veterans.
