Police are investigating a crash on the Van Wyck Expressway in Jamaica that left a pedestrian dead early Tuesday morning.
At 12:09 a.m. on Sept. 26, police from the 102nd Precinct responded to a 911 call of an unconscious man lying in the middle lanes of the Van Wyck Expressway at 91st Avenue.
Upon their arrival, the officers found an unidentified man, who was approximately 50 years old, with severe head and body trauma. EMS responded to the location and pronounced him dead at the scene.
Through a preliminary investigation, members of the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that the man was hit by a grey 2014 Honda Accord, which was operated by a 22-year-old male, southbound on the expressway. According to police, the pedestrian was apparently attempting to walk across the expressway lanes from west to east.
Police said that the Honda Accord driver had fled the location but later returned. It is unclear at this time if the pedestrian had been hit by other vehicles at the scene.
No arrests have been made at this time, and the investigation is ongoing.
