A 70-year-old man died of his injuries after being struck by a cab while he apparently attempted to walk across the Belt Parkway in Springfield Gardens on Sunday morning, police said.

At 4:10 a.m. on Dec. 3, law enforcement sources reported, police responded to a 911 call of a pedestrian struck in the vicinity of the Belt Parkway and 168th Street. Upon their arrival, officers found a 70-year-old man at the location, unconscious and unresponsive.

EMS responded to the scene and rushed the victim to Jamaica Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His identity was withheld pending family notification.

An investigation by the NYPD’s Collision Investigation Squad determined that the victim was attempting to cross the Belt Parkway from south to north. When he stepped into the right travel lane, police said, the victim was struck by an oncoming TLC yellow taxi cab.

The driver of the cab remained at the scene following the incident. It’s not known why the victim was attempting to cross the parkway; pedestrians are not allowed on the roadway.

No other injuries were reported. The investigation is ongoing.
