A Jamaica man was arrested on Wednesday afternoon after his vehicle hit and killed a woman in the Rockaways.

According to police, at 2:31 p.m. on July 11, officers from the 100th Precinct responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck near the intersection of Beach 73rd Street and Rockaway Beach Boulevard in Arverne.

Upon their arrival, cops found 63-year-old Valerie Razack, of Arverne, lying in the roadway unconscious and unresponsive.

Based on a preliminary investigation by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, detectives determined that 40-year-old Peter Lopez of Jamaica was driving a 2009 Dodge Durango westbound on Rockaway Beach Boulevard as Razack was crossing Beach 73rd Street. The pedestrian signal was in Razack’s favor as she was crossing the street.

As Lopez turned left onto Beach 73rd Street, authorities said, he struck Razack with the front driver’s side of his car and dragged her several feet.

Paramedics responded to the scene and transported Razack to St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Lopez remained at the scene following the incident and was taken into custody. He was later charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.
