A 15-year-old boy who was shot by police officers in Far Rockaway this weekend has been charged with allegedly firing on a crowd minutes before the encounter.
According to police, at 10:30 p.m. on Aug. 10, two uniformed police officers were in the vicinity of Redfern Avenue and Nameoke Avenue dispersing a disorderly group. About 30 minutes later, the 15-year-old boy was allegedly seen firing shots into the crowd.
Law enforcement sources said the officers engaged the teen and ordered him to drop his weapon. When he didn’t comply, authorities said, the officers fired their weapons, striking the teen several times.
EMS responded to the scene and took the teenager to Long Island Jewish Medical, where he was listed in stable condition. The officers involved were not injured, but they were taken to South Nassau Hospital for an evaluation.
A Smith and Wesson handgun, which the teenager allegedly had been carrying, was recovered at the scene, police said.
The suspect, whose identity was withheld due to his age, was charged with attempted murder, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm. Sources familiar with the investigation stated that the suspect was wanted in a previous shooting.
