On Feb. 21., The Department of Transportation (DOT) and Rutgers University will host a community focus group concerning bicycling in Queens at Elmhurst Hospital.

The university will hold one focus group with community members and another separate one with business owners to hear about perceptions and desires of bicycling in the neighborhoods of Corona, Elmhurst, East Elmhurst and Jackson Heights.

“We are also curious as to what types of activities, programs or marketing would impact those perceptions,” said a representative for the DOT in an email to QNS.

The focus group will be facilitated by Senior Researcher at the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center at Rutgers University Charles T. Brown. The feedback gathered during from the focus group with be used for The Big Jump Project, an ambitious effort by People for Bikes to transform the way 10 major cities view and use bicycles.

And as a Big Jump City, New York voices must be heard.

“The goal is to see what we can do to increase people’s utilization of bicycles in the 10 Big Jump Cities,” said Brown. Brown said that figuring out barriers to the use of bicycles would be a vital part of the focus groups.

There are a limited number of spots available and you must RSVP to attend. If you’d like to participate please email bigjump@dot.nyc.gov or call 212-839-7175. Please provide advance notice for accessibility accommodations.
