In honor of back-to-school season, Friends of Crocheron and John Golden Park in Bayside is organizing a weekend of free events for kids to get excited about science and fitness at Crocheron Park

The “Back2School Wknd” will kick off on the morning of Saturday, Sep. 7, with real life science experiments outside geared towards children ages 5-12. The “Big Top Science” event is described as a “three-ring science circus” with unique chemistry and physics demonstrations designed to be hands-on.

The show will be led by the Mad Science Group, which brings fun STEM experiences to children across New York City and Westchester County. One of their planned demos will explain how sleeping on a bed of nails can actually provide a good night’s rest.

The prime sponsor of this event is Cord Meyer Development, which is currently celebrating its 120th anniversary as a major developer and retail operator in Queens. NYC Parks will also facilitate the logistics of the events that weekend.

“We are thrilled to work with the New York City Parks Department and Cord Meyer Development to bring ‘Big Top Science’ to Queens,” said Jessica Burke, the Founding President of Friends of Crocheron and John Golden Park. “It’s a great opportunity for families to enjoy the show and spend the morning exploring our beautiful park.”

The following day on Sunday, Sep. 8, KerboomKidz will get kids dancing around the playground. The group works to inspire a mentally and physically healthy lifestyle through dance and fitness.

Not long after Friends of Crocheron  and John Golden Park was founded during the pandemic, Cord Meyer became the premier sponsor in 2022 to help improve the Bayside parkland for the community.

“At Cord Meyer, we’re all about making a positive difference in the lives of area students and young people,” said Cord Meyer Vice President Joe Forgione. “Whether through internships, support of Bayside Little League, or sponsoring an event like ‘Big Top Science,’ Cord Meyer is proud to invest in the community and the future of Queens.”

Both events will start at 10 a.m. on their respective dates at Buz O’Rourke Playground, on 34th Avenue and 214th Place. Registration and the signing of waivers for the free events are encouraged online.
