Queens Borough President Donovan Richards Jr. announced the appointments of Alexandria Sumpter-Delves and Johanna Carmona to the Queens Public Library Board of Trustees on Thursday, Oct. 3.

The Queens Public Library Board of Trustees is governed by a 19-member board that includes appointees from the Mayor and Borough President. The Board of Trustees plays a crucial role in guiding the institution, with responsibilities that include setting policies, hiring and evaluating the library director, and overseeing the library’s general management. The board also selects banks or depositories for managing the library’s funds and collaborates with the community, elected officials, and library staff to initiate and identify capital projects that address the library’s long-term needs.

Sumpter-Delves currently holds the position of Director of College and Career Services at Queens Community House, while Carmona is a legislative administrative manager at the New York City Council under Council Speaker Adrienne Adams.

“The Queens Public Library system is a vital lifeline for countless Queens residents all across our borough, led by true public servants who care deeply about the future of our families and our communities,” said Borough President Richards. “Throughout their careers, Alexandria Sumpter-Delves and Johanna Carmona have shown that same dedication toward those they serve, and I am proud to appoint these two leaders to the Queens Public Library’s Board of Trustees.”

Sumpter-Delves shared her excitement about the appointment, reflecting on how the Queens Public Library played a pivotal role in her own life. “The Queens Public Library served as the greatest support to my family during my most formative years,” she said. “I am happy to support the legacy of vital services provided to Queens residents today.”

With extensive experience in leadership at Queens Community House, Sumpter-Delves helps young adults ages 14 to 24 develop the critical skills needed for success in the workforce. Her previous roles include managing the City University of New York’s partnership with the Mayor’s Office of Housing Recovery Operations after Superstorm Sandy, as well as serving in a key capacity at the Police Athletic League. She is a graduate of the CUNY School of Professional Studies.

Meanwhile, Carmona also emphasized the importance of libraries in her own educational journey. “As a lifelong Queens resident, my local libraries were instrumental to my education and fueled my curiosity. I’m thrilled to join the Board of Trustees of such an important institution and contribute to its continued success,” said Carmona.

Before her role at the New York City Council, Carmona worked as an attorney in both the public and private sectors, including as an assistant district attorney in Kings County, where she prosecuted special victims cases. She is a graduate of New York University and Seton Hall University and is an active member of the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens.

High-ranking city officials also serve as ex officio members of the Board. Trustees serve three-year terms, and Sumpter-Delves and Carmona will fulfill terms that run through December 2025.
