Cyclist fatally struck by FDNY truck in Middle Village: NYPD

A cyclist was struck and killed by the driver of an FDNY firetruck near Juniper Valley Park in Middle Village on Saturday afternoon.

Police from the 104th Precinct in Ridgewood responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Juniper Boulevard North and 80th Street just after 4 p.m.

A 2019 Ferrara FDNY truck from Rescue Company 4 on Queens Boulevard in Woodside was responding to an emergency call of a fire, with lights and sirens activated, when the 59-year-old driver was traveling northbound on 80th Street as they both traveled through a red traffic signal.

A preliminary investigation by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad determined that when the operator was turning right onto Juniper Boulevard North, he struck an unidentified cyclist traveling northbound on 80th Street. The cyclist, believed to be in his 50s, was trapped beneath the rear tires of the rig.

EMS pronounced him dead at the scene. The Rescue 4 truck and its driver remained on the scene. There have been no arrests and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending family notification
