The haunting screeching of three cars bashing together and the indelible image of a Ford Explorer traveling through the air and smashing into the ground upside down leaving one young woman near death, will be a nightmare that one Bayside woman will never forget.
"It was horrible to hear and watch such a horrible catastrophe," said Michelle Bellemo, one of many outraged neighbors who live near the corner of 28 Avenue and Bell Boulevard, where the latest accident occurred. "What does it take for action to be taken? I dont think I will ever shake this."
Many angry citizens looked on Tuesday afternoon on the aftermath of the horrendous accident where three cars stormed into each other just after 3 p.m. in Bayside. One woman was severly injured and all of the vehicles were completely totalled. Many residents were fuming that this was the third accident in two weeks at that corner because of the lack of a stop sign that was destroyed in a previous accident.
Just last week, ten people, including eight school children were injured when a school bus smashed into a livery cab. After the accident, many neighbors said they were assured by police a stop sign would be installed within the week.
"They should have a traffic light or stop signs on every corner," said Lee DeNicola, who has lived down the block for 37 years. "Its like a freeway the way people go down that block. I feel like Im always calling 911. Its a crazy and sad situation."
The driver of the Buick LeSabre involved in the accident did not seek medical attention, but was still very shaken up an hour later. "People just fly down the block without a care or worry," said the man, who asked not to be identified. "Im lucky I was wearing my seat belt, or I might have been killed."
The other two victims were taken to North Shore University Hospital with the driver of the Toyota Torcel in stable condition. The 28-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Explorer was listed in very serious condition.
