Street renamed after Hunter’s Point man

Long Island City community members and family remembered the energetic “Mayor of Hunter’s Point,” Sal Anzalone, by dedicating a street in his honor.
Councilman Eric Gioia renamed the corner of 47th Road and Vernon Boulevard last week Sal Anzalone Place.
Anzalone, a long-time restaurant owner who had been very active in the community, died last year at the age of 73. Anzalone was a member of Community Board No. 2, fought tirelessly for Hunter’s Point, and had become beloved by community members and politicians.
“He was a pillar in our community for decades, and renaming a street in his honor is the least we can do for such a great man who gave so much of his self to our neighborhood,” Gioia said.
Anzalone is survived by his wife Grace, sons Andrew and Joseph, sisters Nina and Francesca and five grandchildren.
“My father was an old fashioned family man, who cared and provided for his family, and had a passion for his restaurant business,” Andrew Anzalone recalled during the renaming. “You might say he had sauce in his veins for blood. He had a great mind for business and saw the limitless potential of Long Island City, which is why he fought so hard for it. He is missed by his friends and customers, but not as much as our family misses him … and his singing.”
