Flushing House, an innovative retirement residence for seniors, is proud of its history as a pioneer in providing independent living for older adults.
Construction on Flushing House, located at 38-20 Bowne Street in Flushing, began in 1974, and the first residents moved in during 1975. This 12-story, 319-unit facility maintains its reputation as one of New York's leading centers for independent living for seniors.
Featured in New York Magazine, this facility, along with several others, was cited as a reason that New York is a senior-friendly city. A full-service retirement residence for independent seniors, monthly rent includes utilities, concierge services, all meals, house keeping with linen exchange, and 24-hour security. Restaurant-style dining in the ground floor dining room includes continental breakfast, lunch and dinner served every day.
A comprehensive activities program allows residents to enjoy arts and crafts, concerts, a computer learning center, fitness center, movies, game nights and two trips scheduled each week utilizing Flushing House's own bus. There is an interfaith chapel, library, game rooms, general store, TV lounge, and a rooftop lounge overlooking Manhattan's skyline.
The non-profit status allows Flushing House to maintain rents at an affordable monthly rate. Each apartment is equipped with a bathroom including: a sink, toilet and bathtub/shower enclosure; individually controlled heating/air-conditioning units; and, a euro-style kitchenette with sink, two-burner electric stove, and refrigerator/freezer unit.
In addition to the all-inclusive services, Flushing House has arranged optional extras for its residents to help make the facility more of a supportive community center than just a place to live. For example, residents with health insurance coverage can take advantage of the fact that Flushing Hospital operates a geriatric clinic on the premises. Also available on-site are home health aides, through the auspices of VIP Health Care Services. Residents can use these services or any provider they choose.
Residents enjoy their own private apartments, are free to come and go, to entertain family and friends, and to make their own financial decisions. Additional onsite services include banking by Flushing Savings Bank on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a professional Beauty and Hair Styling Salon.
Monthly rents for the 364 sq. ft. studios are $1,975, while 600 sq. ft. suites cost $2,950. There is a waiting list on suites; however, several studios are available at this time. For further information, call 718-762-3198, or visit their website at www.flushinghouse.com.
