A Flushing man has been indicted on murder and other charges in the stabbing death of a 40-year-old man on a Flushing street last month. The victim had been on his way home from a Chinese New Year celebration.
“The defendant is accused of fatally stabbing a hard-working man who had immigrated five years ago from China in search of better opportunities to support his wife and daughter back in his homeland,” said District Attorney Richard A. Brown.
“The victim was returning home from a celebration in Flushing marking the beginning of the Chinese New Year. The defendant’s alleged actions were vicious and mindless and demonstrate the lethal consequences of senseless violence.”
A grand jury has returned a three-count indictment charging Kendall Walker, 21, of 44-35 Colden Street in Flushing, with second-degree murder, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. He faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
According to the indictment, at 4 a.m. on Sunday, February 18, the first day of the Chinese Lunar New Year, the defendant fatally stabbed Hung Chi Zhang, 40, a restaurant delivery man, at the intersection of Colden Street and Elder Avenue in Flushing with a four-inch knife. The indictment further charges that the defendant then fled the scene and disposed of the weapon.
Walker was arrested on March 5 by detectives of the New York City Police Department’s (NYPD) 109th Precinct Detective Squad and has been held without bail since his Queens Criminal Court arraignment on March 6. Walker is scheduled to be arraigned on the indictment in Queens Supreme Court on March 23.
The investigation was conducted by Detective Michael Horan of the NYPD’s 109th Precinct Detective Squad under the supervision of Lieutenant Thomas Conforti, Commanding Officer.
