Ex-Newtown hoops star stabbed at college

A former local high school basketball star attending college at SUNY Delhi in upstate New York suffered multiple stab wounds and remains in critical condition. LeFrak City product Tyshawn Bierria was reportedly attacked at approximately 4:30 a.m. last Sunday, April 27 near Russell Hall on campus.
University police have arrested Olanrewaju Ogunwuyi, 21, of New York City, and charged him with first-degree gang assault - meaning police believe there were other people involved and additional arrests could be pending - and second-degree attempted murder. Bierria was first taken to O’Connor Hospital in Delhi and then transferred to Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown, where he remains in critical condition.
Ogunwuyi is not a student at SUNY Delhi and has never has been enrolled at the school. Reportedly, the incident arose over a cell phone and included up to four people including Bierria, who suffered an aortic rupture from one of the stab wounds. His mother, Sharon, who spoke to reporters at a prayer service at the school, said her son lost 75 percent of his blood.
News of the incident shocked those who know Bierria. Described as gentle and quiet, the 6-foot-2 Bierria attended Christ the King his first two years of high school before he transferred to Newtown, where he enjoyed a successful two seasons. As a senior, he led the Pioneers to the New Utrecht Tournament championship with an impressive 36-point, 18-rebound performance which coach Pat Torney calls the best he has ever witnessed.
Torney said when he saw Bierria this winter it seemed like his former player was in good spirits. He had given up basketball - Bierria was a reserve for SUNY Delhi as a sophomore the previous winter - and had decided to concentrate on his studies.
“Wrong place, wrong time,” said local AAU coach Nate Blue, an advisor to Bierria. “He’s not the type of kid to provoke trouble. It is crazy. He’s the last person you’d expect this to happen to.”
