Bayside best place to raise kids

Want to find a good place to raise a family? According to a report from the Citizen’s Committee for Children (CCC), Bayside is the best neighborhood in the city for children.
The report, titled “Keeping Track of New York City’s Children,” also listed Rego Park and Forest Hills near the top of the list of the most kid-friendly spots in the five boroughs.
The study said that Bayside rated the honor on account of clean streets (98.9 percent) and good schools (91.3 percent of elementary and middle school pupils meet math standards.)
Healthcare was also stellar, with only 4.2 percent of Bayside mothers getting late or no prenatal care.
CCC bills itself as the “oldest city-based, multi-issue child advocacy organization.” This is the eighth such report issued since the group was founded in 1944.
Jennifer March-Joly, executive director of the committee said, “We want to make sure the high-risk areas don’t get worse and the progress we’ve seen is maintained.”
The report is based on data from 2005 to 2007. Among other factors, it links financial data - particularly in the housing market - to kid-friendliness. The figures predate the economic slowdown which affected real estate markets in other parts of the U.S. considerably worse than the northeast.
Bayside has a median income of $65,000 and a high-percentage of home ownership. It’s rare to find a house in this suburban-like neighborhood of mostly single family homes for less than $600,000.
The tree-lined streets are both cooler and quieter during warm weather, when people are more likely to be outside. Easy access to numerous parks and playgrounds also pushed Bayside to the top of the list.
In contrast, Mott Haven in the Bronx fared the worst in the report. Only 6 percent of residents there owned their homes and the median income was listed at $17,040. The report found less than 44 percent of kids there met math standards and over 10 percent of moms received inadequate prenatal care.
