Touro College’s Lander Center for Educational Research was recently given a three-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
The grant’s purpose will be to operate one of 10 national Equity Assistance Centers (EAC) that offers assistance to educational institutions when dealing with issues about gender and race.
Dr. LaMar P. Miller, dean of Touro’s Graduate School of Education, expressed his delight about receiving the grant.
“We are pleased that we have been awarded this grant. Through operating Region II’s EAC, the Lander Center for Educational Research will be able to continue its work of implementing and improving equity within the educational system,” Dr. Miller stated.
Region II includes New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands.
Apart from improving teacher quality and student drop-out rates, the Equity Assistance Center will also be working to adjust objectives found in The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, and examine current requirements in the Individuals with Disabilities Act.
The 10 EACs throughout the country are funded under Title IV of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
