PROM 2010: Tips for the perfect prom night

With prom fast approaching, it’s never too early to start shopping for the latest trends, the perfect dress match, dazzling accessories, amazing heels, makeup and your date’s slick tuxedo.

But it doesn’t have to be expensive to stand out from the crowd on prom! Whether your parents are footing the bill or you’ve saved up the whole year, prom money can go far at wholesale stores and on the internet.

Miss New York Teen USA 2010 Thatiana Diaz, a senior at St. Francis Prep, is also planning for her prom. On Friday March 26, Afterprom.com held a fashion show at Club BLVD in Manhattan where she modeled many different styles of dresses. This helped her decide what she wanted to wear and which hair style she should sport for her prom.

“I am looking into buying a one shoulder strap dress in either blue or orange; I want it to be long and elegant,” said Diaz. “I would also like to wear a side hairstyle with half up and the other half in loose curls. Since I am not a big fan of makeup, I plan on keeping it very natural.”

Prom night dresses this season vary in length and designs, however, your perfect match depends entirely on your body type.
Pear shaped figures should wear a dress with a fitted top and/or a-line skirt. To show off some skin, wear something more fitted to accent what you love about your body.

Slim figures should draw attention to the bust line and waist line, while busty figures should play up their gorgeous necklines and seek dresses with fuller coverage for greater support.

On the other hand, to draw attention away from the chest, get a dress that attracts the eye to the hem.

For apple-shaped figures, a dress with an empire waist, that is a high waistline, will draw attention away from the problem area. Show off the legs with a short dress.

Petite girls should also show a little leg with an asymmetrical hemline to appear taller, since floor length gowns and full skirts could overwhelm their small frame.

Girls with hour glass figures – consider yourselves lucky! With a naturally well-proportioned body, you don’t need to disguise anything. Almost every style will flatter.

Capture the spotlight with luminous beaded evening gowns. A sexy, long beaded dress with a low cut V-neckline or a V-neck bodice can show your glamorous celebrity side.

Wrap yourself in luxury with an elegant long strapless dress with sparkling beadwork and a glamorous train. For a more formal dress design consider one shoulder strap with a chic and elegant shimmering fabric. Don’t forget that prints are in and there are many options of multicolored print designs for prom.

Short dresses have become a must have not only for prom but for after parties, with flared layered skirts that make moving around and dancing much easier. Many of these designs come with a wide waistband or sash featuring a stunning floral accent or a sparkling beaded bodice.

Yet, no dress is complete without the perfect accessories and heels. Long shiny, shimmering gold or silver earrings are in as are bracelets and necklaces. Carry a simple purse large enough to carry your lipstick, powder, money, camera, and a few safety pins – nothing bigger. Amazing shoes do not make sense if they will make your feet hurt, though high-heeled shoes are ideal for this event because your legs will appear longer and slimmer, and heels allow you to maintain good posture. Remember to match your heels, jewelry and handbag!

The guys shouldn’t feel left out, however. They must also kick it to the curve with a grandiose appearance as they enter prom wearing their tuxedos – white only if warm or summer – silk or cotton shirts, and formal dress shoes. And fellas, remember to match your date’s colors and look neat at all times.

Take these tips and get ready for a night of memories, music, dancing, laughter and fun with friends, where you and your dress will shine!
