St. John’s to offer BS degree in Drama

Through a partnership between the Queens campus of St. John’s University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) in Manhattan, students will now be able to earn a Bachelor of Science in Dramatic Arts, Film and Television.

This 135.5-credit degree program will begin in the fall of 2010.

“The genesis of this degree came from an articulation agreement with the AADA we entered back in May 2006,” said Frank Brady, the chair of the Communications, Journalism and Media Studies Department at St. John’s. “This is a historic occasion for both institutions.”

Students who complete the two-year program at AADA, either in New York or Los Angeles, will be able to transfer 60 credits to St. John’s University’s B.S. in Television and Film Studies if they have a grade point average of at least 2.0. Those who have completed one year at AADA would be able to transfer 30 credits.

“We are celebrating a milestone – [our] 125th anniversary – and it is only fitting that AADA partner with St. John’s this year for such a worthwhile endeavor,” said AADA Acting President for Student Life Christine Arnold Schroeder. “Our students are inspired and thrilled for this degree opportunity and we are happy to sign on to make this a reality.”

Brady also said, “The academy has sent us well-trained, creative and enthusiastic students who we have had the pleasure of teaching, and we expect that trend to continue as more and more students come to St. John’s to complete their studies and earn their degrees.”
