HERMAN C. “POP POP” HICKMAN died on Saturday, January 28, in Cumberland, R.I. at the age of 98. He was born on Oct. 3, 1913 to Ernest and Stella (nee Wenzel) Hickman in Brooklyn and was the oldest of five children.

Due to the Great Depression, he needed to get a job immediately after graduating from Bushwick High School, forgoing his dream of a college education. Eventually he became a salesman for the Embassy Grocery Company, selling wholesale groceries to hospitals, schools and other institutions in the area.

While making a sales call at Prospect Heights Hospital in Brooklyn, he met Eleanor Smigelski, a dietician from Larksville, Pa. Herman made the sale and married Eleanor in 1941. They settled in Glendale, where Herman became active in Sacred Heart parish serving as a Eucharistic Minister and president of the Holy Name Society. He helped organize a Nocturnal Adoration Society, annual men’s retreats and the Long Island-based Guild of Catholic Salesmen.

He was also Area Commissioner for the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of the Catholic Committee on Scouting, helping to establish a number of Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops.

Herman was also a founding member and Grand Knight of the Monsignor Sherman Council of the Knights of Columbus and a fourth degree knight. After retirement, he served many years as executive secretary for the Glendale Chamber of Commerce.

Herman’s other passions included barbershop singing as a member of SPEBSQSA, ballroom dancing and bowling with the Sacred Heart senior league.

Herman was happily married to Eleanor for 46 years, until her death in 1988. At age 75, he married a family friend, Marian Bergmann, also of Glendale. Herman and Marian enjoyed eight wonderful years dancing, traveling, bowling and enjoying each others company until Marian’s untimely death in 1997. IN MEMORIAM

Hickman is survived by his devoted children, Paul Hickman and his wife Jennifer of Andover, R.I.; Gerry Hickman and his wife Kathy of Attleboro, Mass.; Fran Hickman and her partner Julie Genz of Roxbury, Ct. and Peter Hickman and his wife Marjorie of Arlington, Va.; two stepsons: George Bergmann and his wife Susan of Alexandria, Va.; Raymond Bergmann and his wife Yasia of Williamstown as well as ten grandchildren: Kristen Hufford, Lauren Campbell, Maggie Bokor, Karl, Joseph, Katie, Paul and Andrew Hickman, Vanessa and Paul Bergmann and four great-grandchildren: Margaret Hanover, Aiden, Emma and Taner Campbell. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A wake was held on Wednesday, February 1, in the memorial chapel of the Dyer-Lake Funeral Home, 161 Commonwealth Ave., North Attleboro, Mass. AMass of Christian Burial will be offered today, Thursday, February 2, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Evangelist Church, 133 North Main St., Route 152, Attleboro, Mass., by Rev. RichardM. Roy, followed by interment at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name may be made to Mount St. Rita Health Centre, 15 Sumner Brown Road, Cumberland, R.I. 02864.

HERBERT KOENIG of Fort Richey, Fla., died on Wednesday, January 25, at the age of 72. A native of Ridgewood, he was the son of the late Frank and Albina, dear brother of Lillian Koenig and fond uncle of Frank. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Matthias Church, Ridgewood, followed by interment at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village, under the direction of Peter J. Geis Funeral Home, 57-34 Catalpa Ave., Ridgewood.

KLAUS APOLD of Glendale died on Wednesday, January 25, at the age of 76. A native of Germany, he was the beloved husband of Susan J. (nee Brechling), devoted father of Karen Malamas and Gary and Cornelia Apold, proud grandfather of Marina and Marcus Apold and dear brother of Irene Lillig of Germany. He is also survived by niece Gabi Schmidt and numerous grand-nieces and nephews. He was the former co-owner of Fricker Upholstery of Richmond Hill and a member of the Masonic Lodge Von Mensch No. 765 of Whitestone. Services were offered at George Werst Funeral Home, 71-41 Cooper Ave., Glendale, by Pastor David Demera, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Maspeth.

SOPHIE TRAMPOSCH of Ridgewood died on Thursday, January 26, at the age of 86. A native of Ridgewood, she was the beloved wife of Fred and devoted mother of Raymond Henn and the late Joseph. She was interred at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I., under the direction of Peter J. Geis Funeral Home, 57-34 Catalpa Ave., Ridgewood.

EDWARD STOEHRER died on Wednesday, January 25 at the New York State Veterans Home in St. Albans at the age of 86. He was the husband of the late Edith Vanderberg Stoehrer, devoted father of Kathleen and Richard, devoted grandfather of Kenneth and Mary, Colleen and John, Richard and Nicholas and fond greatgrandfather to Alexis, Kadence, John, Jake, Christopher and Joshua. He was a disabled World War II veteran, a past commander of the Ridgewood VFW Post 123, a life-long member of the American Legion and a past grand marshal of the Ridgewood- Glendale Memorial Day Parade. He was interred at the Cemetery of the Evergreens, Brooklyn, under the direction of Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Ave., Middle Village.

LUIGI VIAGGIO died on Wednesday, January 25, at the age of 62. He was the beloved husband of Mattia Viaggio, loving father of Maria Antonella Viaggio-Giovanni, Daniela Viaggio and Nicolo Luigi Viaggio, cherished son of Antonia and the late Nicolo and dear brother of Santina Viaggio, Maria DiPrimo, Angela McGuire, Angelo Viaggio and Tina Viaggio. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, January 30, at Our Lady of Hope Church, Middle Village, followed by entombment at St. John Cemetery Christ the Redeemer Mausoleum, Middle Village, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Ave., Middle Village.

DENNIS J. KELLY died on Sunday, January 22, at the age of 63. He was the beloved father of Danielle Santoro and Shane Kelly, cherished grandfather of Isabella and Vincent and loving brother of Raymond Kelly and the late Robert Kelly. He was also a dear uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Thursday, January 26, at St. Stanislaus Church, Maspeth, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Brooklyn, under the direction of Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Ave., Middle Village.

ANGELINA VESSA died on Tuesday, January 24, at the age of 96. She was the wife of the late Benjamin, loving mother of Ralph Vessa and Rosemarie Bamonte, mother-in-law of Joanne and Carmine, cherished grandmother of Carmine, Benjamin, Benjamin, Angela and Nicholas, great-grandfather of Carmine IV, Gianna, Michael, Marco, Isabella and Gabriella and dear sister of Benjamin Vertuccio and Frank Vertuccio. CLAUDETTE C. CHIELLO of Ridgewood died on Saturday, January 28, at the age of 91. A native of Brooklyn, she was the wife of the late Vincenzo and devoted mother of Richard Chiello and Linda Giarratani. She was also survived by two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was also an active member of the Columbiettes and the Rosary Altar Society. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church, Ridgewood, followed by interment at St. John Cemetery, Middle Village, under the direction of George Werst Funeral Home, 71-41 Cooper Ave., Glendale.

ARTHUR G. SOLDINGER of Middle Village died on Sunday, January 29, at the age of 87. A proud veteran of World War II, he was the beloved husband of Elfriede and devoted father of Wayne, Arlene Di- Girolamo and Barbara Jaycox. He is also survived by six grandchildren. Services were offered at Hess-Miller Funeral Home, 64-19 Metropolitan Ave., Middle Village, followed by cremation at Fresh Pond Crematory, Middle Village.

ANITA F. RICCA of Ridgewood died on Friday, January 27, at the age of 89. Anative of Marlow, Okla., she was the wife of the late Philip, devoted mother of Judy Biel and dear sister of Fern Matthews. VICTORIA DATCU of East Elmhurst died on Friday, January 6, at the age of 84. Anative of Tapu, Romania, she was the dear sister of Aurel Datcu. MARY A. MUIR of Brooklyn died on Wednesday, January 25, at the age of 89. A native of Brooklyn, she was the wife of the late Harold J., devoted mother of Kathleen Peacock and James Muir and dear sister of Emma McGuire. She is also survived by three grandchildren. PETER T. CROWLEY of Springfield, Mass. died onWednesday, January 25, at the age of 73. A native of Brooklyn, he was the devoted father of Anna Garcia, Peter Crowley Jr., Peter Crowley, Theresa Sanchez, Dorothy Schall, Donna Smith, Hugh Crowley, Brenda Crowley and Ruthann Krawitz. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren and 10 greatgrandchildren.
