The American Martyrs Catholic Church of Bayside’s CYO baseball team won the Queens championship last month, redeeming themselves of a winless 0-12 season just two years ago.
The Eagles beat Our Lady of Miraculous Medal of Briarwood 21-11 in the June 16 final at Kissena Corridor Park, overcoming a 0-8 deficit in the third of seven innings.
American Martyrs head Coach Michael J. Cassano, who took over the team after the previous coach’s sudden death two years ago, said the title win was the completion of an amazing underdog story.
“The sense of accomplishment was huge,” he said. “To see that same bunch of kids [who were winless two years ago] become CYO division champs was really a great story and an amazing year.”
