The mayor’s office announced Saturday a South Jamaica charter school, previously turned down for co-location, will have a new home this fall.
Success Academy Jamaica was one of three charter schools the city Department of Education had originally rejected for co-location in February. But following strong backlash from charter school advocates, as well as a provision in the state budget effectively reversing Mayor Bill de Blasio’s decision on the schools, the DOE found alternative spaces for all three charters.
The school was originally set to open in the August Martin High School building in South Jamaica, but will now occupy a space in St. Pius X School, at 147-65 249th St., in Rosedale instead.
“It doesn’t matter whether a child attends a district school, a charter school or a parochial school. These are all our kids,” First Deputy Mayor Tony Shorris said. “We pledged to parents we would have a safe, high-quality environment for these students, and this outcome delivers on that promise.”
