The NYPD was warning the public about an ongoing scam that hacks personal banking information from ATMs using a device inserted into the machines.
Police said account information and passwords could be stolen from a machine plagued with a duplicate card reading camera that transmits information to a remote hacker.
The NYPD was asking the public to be cautious, to inspect all ATMs before using them and to be suspicious of any machine that has anything loose or crooked attached to the card reader or keypad.
Scratches, tape or other residue are also signs that a machine has been tampered with. The NYPD is asking anyone who sees a machine with one of these devices to call 911 immediately.
