Queens wants quiet skies

By Alex Robinson

More than 300 borough residents, fed up with the never-ending din coming from airplanes, rallied at Cunningham Park Sunday afternoon to say “enough is enough.”

Advocacy group Queens Quiet Skies hosted the rally, which was attended by a long list of politicians, and sought to put pressure on the Port Authority and Federal Aviation Administration to decrease the plane traffic over residential neighborhoods.

The group applauded that Gov. Andrew Cuomo recently mandated a roundtable discussion between airlines, residents and the FAA, but said more needs to be done.

“We deserve better,” said Susan Carroll, a Flushing resident and member of Queens Quiet Skies. “No one should be subjected to planes flying at low altitudes at one minute intervals for 18 hours a day every day.”
