Woman killed in police pursuit collision in Cambria Heights

A car crash following a police pursuit through Cambria Heights Thursday afternoon ended with one woman dead, a man injured and the driver of the vehicle in custody, according to the NYPD.

Police said Derrick Perkins, 50, was suspected of committing a grand larceny in front of 216-19 Hempstead Ave. Police responded to a 911 call about the incident at about 12:49 p.m. Officers transmitted a description of the car and the suspect, and plainclothes officers saw him around the intersection of 116th Avenue and 225th Street.

The officers attempted to search the car, but Perkins sped off south on 225th Street, police said.

Near the intersection of 225th Street and Linden Boulevard, Perkins ran a red light and slammed into a Saturn sedan. Perkins fled on foot. but was apprehended by officers soon after.

The driver of the sedan was identified as Roxina Clayton, 78. EMS workers pronounced her dead at the scene. A 29-year-old man was also injured in the leg during the collision.

Charges were pending against Perkins, according to the NYPD.
