A 22-year-old Corona man faces up to 40 years in prison after being convicted of trying to kill a police officer and another man in Elmhurst in 2014, according to the Queens District Attorney’s office.
Christian Mosquera, a known gang member, was convicted by a jury yesterday stemming from a June 21, 2014 shooting, where he chased a man along Lamont Avenue and then began firing his weapon. When the police responded to the scene at about 1:45 am, he was asked to drop his gun but instead he fired one shot at the officers before fleeing.
Mosquera dropped his .22 Ruger Mark 1 pistol near the scene which was then recovered by police.
“Every day police officers in this City risk their lives serving and protecting New York City’s residents and visitors,” said Queens District Attorney Richard A Brown. “On a summer day in June of 2014, two officers heard gunshots and immediately responded to the scene. They spotted a man with a gun and ordered him to drop the weapon. This individual, however, refused and turned his gun toward the responding police. He fired once, but fortunately, neither officer was hit by that bullet. A jury has spoken and the defendant will be sentenced to a very long term behind bars.”
Mosquera was found guilty of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault and second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He will be sentenced on November 7, 2016
