The 40-year-old man who allegedly attempted to kidnap an 11-year-old girl in Ridgewood on Saturday has apparently been hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation and his arraignment has been delayed, according to court records.
Relyn Estrada, 40, faces kidnapping and other charges for the attempted abduction on Dec. 15, which was apparently foiled thanks to the help of a good Samaritan. Later that evening, he was pictured being escorted out of the 104th Precinct’s Ridgewood stationhouse.
However, court records on Monday indicated that Estrada had yet to be arraigned, as he was apparently hospitalized. The Police Department told QNS that he is currently undergoing psychological tests. There’s no word yet as to when he’ll be arraigned in Queens Criminal Court.
According to police, the 11-year-old victim was walking in the area of Centre Street and Seneca Avenue at about 7 a.m. on Dec. 15 when Estrada allegedly called her from his car. When she fled, the man is said to have followed her and grabbed her.
She began to call for help as she was allegedly taken to the backseat of Estrada’s car. That’s when a 45-year-old man intervened by asking if she knew Estrada.
The bystander restrained Estrada until police from the 104th Precinct arrived, and officers subsequently took Estrada into custody.
Police also said Estrada was found in possession of an illegal weapon, but did not specify what kind.
Estrada was charged with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment and reckless endangerment. As a registered sex offender, Estrada was further charged for failing to report a change of address.
In a Facebook post, the NYPD advises anyone who has additional information on Estrada or may have been one of his victims to call Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS.
