The Queens Courier and QNS came together to make Christmas a little bit better for the children at Lefrak City with a toy drive and a visit from Santa Claus.
On Dec. 14, dozens of children and parents visited the library in the residential complex and went home with new toys at the event organized in part by George Onuorah, originally from Nigeria but having spent considerable time in the U.S. after attending York College and founding Our World Media.
“For me, [the children] are our future and the next generation,” Onuorah said. “The love we show them today goes a long way and will surely impact their lives positively … We can all play our small part to make this world a better place.”
Onuorah has lived in LeFrak City since 1984, serving as a liaison for former Councilwoman Helen Sears and has also served on Community Board 4.
Sharon Diamond, the assistant manager of the library, said the toy donations do a lot more than just provide something to preoccupy the children who come from low-income families, but it can also be an act of love.
“They’re energetic. You have to keep them occupied, you have to keep them engaged and you have to show them love. Because a lot of them don’t get that connection at home,” Diamond said. “So they come to the library for that release.”
The toy drive was organized between the Schneps Communications and Onuorah, as well as Patricia Nekankwe.
