Police have arrested a driver who hit and critically injured a pedestrian in Bayside last week.
Germain Selby, 39, of Rochdale was arrested on Jan. 18 and charged with failure to exercise due care and failure to yield to a pedestrian who had the right of way.
On Jan. 11 around 4:30 p.m., authorities received a call about a crash at 223rd Street and Northern Boulevard. When officers from 111th Precinct the arrived at the scene, they found a pedestrian who was critically injured in the crosswalk.
EMS personnel responded to the scene and transported the individual to NewYork-Presbyterian Queens in Flushing. The victim was listed in critical condition.
Inspector Steven D’Ullise, commander of the NYPD Highway Patrol, took to Twitter to announce Selby’s arrest.
The intersection at 223rd Street and Northern Boulevard has been the site of crashes and multiple close calls over the years including the death of elderly cyclist Michael Schenkman in 2016. Schenkman’s death spurred DOT to create a protected bike lane, which runs along Northern Boulevard all the way to Douglaston.
The bike lane has sparked controversy among local residents who say the lane hasn’t made the roadway safer for drivers or pedestrians.
