A Long Island City man who allegedly struck an 8-pound Chihuahua in the head with a metal rod—blinding the animal in one eye—has been indicted on animal cruelty charges and faces up to seven years in prison, prosecutors say.
Luis Jimenez, 26, of 10th Street, allegedly struck the dog at around 9 p.m. on Dec. 20, shortly after he was in a fist fight with the owner of the dog’s brother. Surveillance video captured the incident.
“The two-year-old pup suffered severe injuries to her face and right eye. This kind of alleged brutality against an eight-pound dog is both senseless and heartless,” said Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown in a statement.
The dog, called Gigi, suffered severe damage to her right eye and a broken right cheekbone. She is blind in one eye and the damaged eye may have to be removed.
Jimenez has been charged with second-degree criminal mischief, torturing animals and aggravated cruelty. Bail was set at $15,000 and he has been ordered to return to court on May 3. If convicted he faces up to nine years in prison.
“The defendant will be held accountable for allegedly inflicting immeasurable pain on this poor animal,” Brown said.
Jimenez’ attorney could not be reached for comment.
Correction: The DA release initially said Jimenez faced 9 years in prison. The DA later issued a correction, noting it was in fact 7 years.
