Councilwoman Joann Ariola serves a district that knows all too well the problems with rainwater drainage and flooding. In embracing environmental activism and smart water usage, Ariola will host a free rain barrel giveaway in Glendale on Saturday.
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will distribute rain barrels from 10 a.m. to noon on July 22 at the Glendale Community Garden, located at 74-10 88th St., to those who registered for the event in advance.
“Rain barrels can help homeowners to lower their water bills, while also making their neighborhoods more resilient,” Ariola said. “Rain barrels go a long way towards reducing the amount of storm-water runoff that enters and potentially overloads our citywide drainage systems. As we’ve seen before, even a hard rain has the potential to overload our systems, but each barrel handed out takes a little more pressure off of our sewers during a storm and helps make NYC that much more prepared for the next weather event”
According to the DEP, rain barrels are connected directly to a home’s gutter or downspout to capture and store the rainwater that falls from the roof. Rain barrels should only be used for non-drinking purposes like gardening and cleaning. During the winter, barrels should be removed from downspouts to avoid freezing and damage.
Residents living in the councilwoman’s district are encouraged to call Jessica Genna at 718-738 1083 to register for the event. Only one rain barrel is given per household.
Ariola serves the neighborhoods of Belle Harbor, Breezy Point, Broad Channel, Howard Beach, Lindenwood, Neponsit, Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Rockaway Park, Roxbury, South Ozone Park, West Hamilton Beach and Woodhaven.
