The number of reported rapes spiked in southern Queens during the 28-day period from July 1-28, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats. Meanwhile, felony assaults jumped in northern Queens over the same respective period.

Rapes in southern Queens were up 70% year-over-year, from 10 cases during the 28-day-period in 2023 to 17 for the same July 1-28 period in 2024. The increase was due in large part to a big boost in cases within the confines of the 103rd Precinct, which covers Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica. Reported rapes there went up from zero in the 28-day-period last year to four for the same time frame this year.

In northern Queens, felony assaults were up 32.1% over the same 28-day period of time, from 215 in 2023 to 284 in 2024. Felony assaults continue to be a big problem in the area. For instance, there was a 46% increase year-over-year from June 2023 to June 2024.

The 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace, had the most significant increase in felony assaults over the 28-day period. Reported cases there rose from 25 last year to 63 this year.
