Crunching the Queens crime numbers: robberies down across the borough, rapes continue to rise in southern Queens

The amount of reported robberies across Queens had substantial decreases during the 28-day period from Sept. 2-29, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the NYPD’s latest crime stats. One notable trend that did continue from the August 2024 crime stats was the increase in rapes across southern Queens.

In northern Queens, robberies dropped 10.9% year-over-year, from 184 in 2023 to 164 in 2024.

The 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace, experienced the most significant decline in robberies among northern Queens precincts. Reported cases there went down from 28 last year to 15 this year.

Southern Queens experienced similar trends in robberies over the same period of time, with reported cases falling 16.2%, from 130 in 2023 to 109 in 2024.

The most significant fall in cases was experienced within the confines of the 106th Precinct, which covers Howard Beach, Lindenwood and Ozone Park. Reported robberies there went fell from 29 last year to 19 this year.

One of the more noteworthy year-over-year increases was the number of rapes in southern Queens. During the 28-day period, cases there went up 31.2%, from 16 in 2023 to 21 in 2024.

The 101st Precinct, which covers Far Rockaway and Bayswater, experienced the largest jump in rapes. Reported cases there rose from two last year to five this year.

Year-over-year, the total number of reported major crimes for the 28-day period ending Sept. 29 – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – ended up going down in both northern and southern Queens.

Major crimes in northern Queens dropped 2.06%, from 1,313 in 2023 to 1,286 in 2024. In addition to the drop in robberies, another key factor into this decline was a 15.9% fall in vehicle thefts, from 277 last year to 233 this year.

Despite major crimes decreasing over the 28-day period compared to the previous year, northern Queens has actually seen more major crimes throughout the entirety of 2024 thus far. Through Sept. 29, major crimes in northern Queens are up 3.61% from last year, from 12,313 in 2023 to 12,757 in 2024.

In southern Queens, major crimes for the 28-day-period are down 4.75% year-over-year, from 927 in 2023 to 883 in 2024. However, major crimes are up year-to-date there as well, having increased 0.28%, from 8,242 last year to 8,265 this year.
