Douglaston Community Theatre is set to launch its production of Neil Simon’s celebrated farcical play Rumors on Friday night.
The production premieres at Zion Church Parish Hall at 243-20 Church St. at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8, before running intermittently until a final performance at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23.
Rumors, which opened on Broadway in 1988, follows four New York power couples as they gather at a Snendens Landing townhouse in the Palisades to celebrate a tenth wedding anniversary. The couples experience a severe attack of farce after the Deputy Mayor of New York, Charlie Brock, shot himself in the head.
Although the incident only left Brock with a flesh wound, it sets off a series of events, causing the four couples to experience a severe attack of farce.
As the tenth wedding anniversary party commences, Brock lies bleeding in another room, and his wife Myra is nowhere in sight. The first guests, lawyer Ken Gorman and his wife Chris scramble to get “the story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.
Douglaston Community Theatre’s production is directed by JK Larkin and produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., one of the biggest theater licensing companies in New York.
The play premieres at Zion Church Parish Hall on Friday before a second performance at the venue at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9. It will run again the following weekend, with performances at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 17.
The production will conclude the following weekend with three performances, including one at 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22, and two on Nov. 23—one at 2 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.
Douglaston Theatre Company recommends making reservations for any of the upcoming shows, with tickets available for $22 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
