New York City Mayor Eric Adams named Jessica Tisch as the new Commissioner of the NYPD on Wednesday, Nov. 20.
The appointment will be effective on Monday, Nov. 25, and Tisch will become only the second female to serve in the esteemed role.
Council Member Robert Holden has praised Tisch’s appointment and lauded her as a ‘phenomenal choice.’
“I’ve had the privilege of working with Jessica Tisch since her days in the Police Department, as Commissioner of DoITT, and most recently in Sanitation. She’s a phenomenal choice for Police Commissioner and will be a steady hand during these turbulent times,” Holden stated.
“I look forward to continuing our partnership to improve public safety in my district and ensuring the NYPD has the support it needs to keep our city safe.”
Tisch has spent 12 years with the NYPD and was appointed as Commissioner of the NYC Department of Sanitation in April 2022.
Prior to this, she served as commissioner of the New York City Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications (DoITT) and citywide chief information officer from December 2019 to January 2022.
When announcing her new role, Mayor Adams said: “The people of this city have been clear that they agree with what our administration has been fighting for since day one in office: a safer city where they don’t need to worry about walking down the street or taking the subway at night.”
Tisch has more than enough experience with the NYPD, also working as a crime strategy expert.
“To ensure New Yorkers have the ability to thrive in our city, we need a strong, battle-tested leader who will continue to drive down crime and ensure New Yorkers are safe and feel safe, and I cannot think of a leader more up to the task than Commissioner Jessica Tisch,” Adams added.
