The number of reported rapes across southern Queens dropped significantly during the 28-day period from Nov. 4 to Dec. 1, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the latest crime stats from the NYPD. Additionally, grand larcenies continued to trend down across both northern and southern Queens.
Rapes in southern Queens decreased 45.5% year-over-year, from 22 over the four-week period in 2023 compared to 12 in 2024. Seven of the eight precincts reported fewer cases for the 28-day period compared to the same time frame last year.
The 103rd Precinct, which covers Hollis Park Gardens, Hollis, Lakewood and Jamaica, experienced the most significant decline in rapes among the southern Queens precincts. Reported cases there fell from six for the 28-day period last year to two this year.
Despite the decline in the number of reported rapes in southern Queens, northern Queens ended up having a 28.6% increase in cases over the four-week period, from 14 in 2023 to 18 in 2024. The biggest jump was seen within the confines of the 109th Precinct, which spans Flushing, Queensboro Hill, College Point, Whitestone and Bay Terrace. Reported cases there rose from none last year to six this year.
In northern Queens, grand larcenies were down 18% for the 28-day period compared to last year, from 499 in 2023 to 409 in 2024.
While all eight precincts in northern Queens saw a decline in the number of grand larcenies, the sharpest drop was seen in the 111th Precinct, which covers Bayside, Douglaston, Little Neck, Auburndale, Hollis Hills and Fresh Meadows. Cases there fell from 45 for the four-week period last year to 26 this year.
Grand larcenies in southern Queens dropped 13.7% during the same period of time, from 278 in 2023 to 240 in 2024.
The 107th Precinct, which covers Cunningham Heights, Hilltop Village and Fresh Meadows, had the most significant drop in grand larcenies. Cases there plummeted from 61 last year to 31 this year.
Year-over-year, the total number of reported major crimes for the 28-day period ending Dec. 1 – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny and vehicle thefts – ended up decreasing across both northern and southern Queens, and at similar rates.
Major crimes in northern Queens were down 9.9% for the 28-day period, from 1,253 in 2023 to 1,129 in 2024. With the exception of rape and felony assault, all major crime categories were down in the northern part of the borough.
In southern Queens, major crimes went down 9.4%, from 840 in 2023 to 761 in 2024 over the 28-day period. While felony assaults and vehicle thefts experienced no change from a year ago, all other major crimes in this section of the borough went down.
