The Flushing-based nonprofit Glow Cultural Center held a special Lunar New Year celebration and cultural fair on Sunday, Feb. 2, at Flushing Town Hall.
One of the biggest highlights of the event was a Peking opera performance, courtesy of the Oriental Operatic Artists Association. Peking opera is one of the most iconic Chinese performance arts.
Another major highlight was the Lunar New Year attire parade down Main Street in Flushing. Participants had the opportunity to show off their colorful traditional attire to onlookers of the parade.
Other notable features of the event included the traditional lion dance and face-changing performances. Audiences were left spellbound by these masterful artistic performances.
In addition to the many artistic performances, the Glow Cultural Center’s Lunar New Year celebration also featured several cultural booths to further entertain Queens residents on hand. Some of these booths included Chinese calligraphy, making dough figurines and sugar painting.
Several local leaders were on hand to take in this fun event from the Glow Cultural Center, including Council Members Sandra Ung and Christine Liu, Congresswoman Grace Meng and Assembly Member Steven Raga.
This year’s Lunar New Year celebrated the Year of the Snake, which symbolizes wisdom, enlightenment and longevity. This event took place shortly after Congresswoman Meng reintroduced measures to declare Lunar New Year a federal holiday.
