The Billy Mac Bash, a fundraising event in honor of the late son of North Shore Towers Country Club staff member Patti McCarthy, will be held at the Towers on Friday, October 26.
On May 16, Billy passed away from a sudden arrhythmia at the age of 22. At the time, since Billy was a student at SUNY Maritime, his family approached the school and expressed their interest in setting up a scholarship in his name.
While also celebrating the life of her son, McCarthy said the Billy Mac Bash will be a good opportunity for more funds to be contributed to the scholarship. The event will begin in the afternoon with a golf tournament that will tee off at 2 p.m. Following that, there will be a party in Towers on the Green from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. It will include raffles and a 50/50.
“Billy was at Maritime on a scholarship and I think those young men and women there work extremely hard,” McCarthy, a resident of New Hyde Park, said. “I feel like if we can help some kids with scholarships in his name, that would be a good thing. They really work hard and are a phenomenal group of people.”
The cost of participating in both the golf tournament and the party is $150. To attend just the party, the cost is $75. People can also sponsor a hole or fairway for $100.
The Billy Mac Bash is open to any members of the community who are interested in getting involved. So far, McCarthy said that she has gotten a tremendous response with 250 people having already signed up.
McCarthy said that they hope to be able to give out the first scholarship in honor of Billy beginning with the next incoming class. She added that they are still deciding on the criteria that recipients will have to meet.
People are asked to RSVP for the Billy Mac Bash by October 19. For more information, contact Patti McCarthy at
