Thenga Adams had just arrived at JFK Airport on a flight from Georgetown, Guyana, on April 7 when he was stopped by U. S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers for an inspection, officials said.
During the inspection, CBP officers found several pairs of running shoes in his luggage that contained a white powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine, according to CBP. The seized drugs totaled about 2 pounds and had an estimated value of $30,000.
Adams was arrested for the importation of a controlled substance and now faces federal narcotics smuggling charges, CBP officials said.
