Construction on the long-awaited $2.1 billion expansion of the No. 7 train along the west side of Manhattan is officially underway.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor Eliot Spitzer announced the beginning of the construction on Monday, December 3, which will extend the No. 7 line from its current endpoint at Times Square and Seventh Avenue westward under 41st Street to Eleventh Avenue, and south under Eleventh Avenue to a new station at 34th Street.
The extension is a major component of the city’s plan to develop the area known as the Hudson Yards and experts believe that development could net the city nearly $60 billion in tax revenues during the next 30 years.
“The development of the Far West Side simply couldn’t happen without this extension, and because of it we will see this area give rise to a vibrant and exciting neighborhood with needed housing, office space,
commercial and cultural venues,
and parks and open spaces,” Bloomberg said.
