FLUSHING — A Woodside man was arrested last Thursday and charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a 32-year-old man in Flushing June 13, police said.
Marlon Madrid, 22, of 50-07 Broadway in Woodside was charged with attempted murder in the second degree, assault in the first degree, criminal use of a firearm and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
The shooting was at about 12:30 a.m. in front of 132-40 Sanford Ave. in Flushing, Chew said.
The victim was shot several times and taken to New York Hospital in serious but stable condition, police said.
Gunman robs Radio Shack on Northern Boulevard
BAYSIDE — A robber took an undetermined amount of cash from a Radio Shack on Northern Boulevard Friday, police said.
At about 7:45 p.m. a man walked up to the register at the Radio Shack at 251-18 Northern Blvd. in Bayside to buy batteries, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
As the cashier opened the cash register, the man displayed a black revolver and demanded all the money, Chew said.
The cashier complied and the gunman fled on foot east on Northern Boulevard, Chew said.
No one was injured. Police were investigating.
Cash, phone cards taken in Flushing burglary
FLUSHING — A robber or robbers entered the Bally Market in Flushing through the roof Sunday and stole a safe containing $23,000 in cash and $36,000 in phone cards, police said.
The burglar or burglars left the market at 41-82 Main St. in Flushing through the back door, police said.
The burglary was reported to police at noon Sunday.
Suspect in TA robberies arrested in Queensboro Hill
QUEENSBORO HILL — A suspect wanted in connection with numerous burglaries, grand larcenies and petit larcenies throughout Transit Authority crew locker rooms in Queens, Brooklyn and Bronx was arrested Tuesday, police said.
Edward Brown, 19, of 67-31 Kissena Blvd. in Queensboro Hill was arrested at 4:30 p.m. by members of the Transit Authority’s Queens Robbery Squad and charged with four counts of burglary, two counts of grand larceny, petit larceny and criminal mischief, police said.
NYPD to use computers to give out parking tickets
Manhattan — The New York City Police Department has announced it will soon begin testing new hand-held computers to issue parking tickets.
The pilot program, which is to begin in early fall, will evaluate the overall effectiveness of the ticketing system under working conditions.
The idea is to use computer technology to reduce illegible, inaccurate or missing data on parking tickets. Such errors can render a ticket invalid.
“The use of these computerized devices is another step in the increased use of technology in the NYPD,” Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said. “We expect that these hand-held computers will greatly enhance the efficiency and accountability of our traffic enforcement operations.”
Hit-and-run victim in Jamaica walks to hospital with injury
JAMAICA — A woman managed to walk to the hospital after she was the victim of a hit-and-run on Queens Boulevard in Jamaica Friday, police said.
The woman, who did not give her name to police, walked into Mary Immaculate Hospital at about 6:25 a.m. with a minor leg injury, saying she had been struck by a car at the intersection of Queens Boulevard and Kew Gardens Road, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
The car speeded away. Police were investigating.
Jamaica parole officer charged with having heroin at home
JAMAICA — A parole officer was arrested Tuesday and charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance after police said they found a quantity of heroin in her home, police said.
Asia Rose, 31, was arrested at her home at 119-42 178th St. in Jamaica, police said.
32-year-old sentenced to life in murder of Far Rock woman
FAR ROCKAWAY — A 32-year-old Far Rockaway man was sentenced July 19 to 30 years to life in prison for killing his elderly neighbor in the Edgemere Houses last August, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Eric Burton of 54-30 Beach Channel Drive admitted in a June 28 state Supreme Court hearing that he killed the 81-year-old woman who lived on the same floor as he did, Brown said.
Burton rode the elevator with the woman, known as Miss Maggie, on Aug. 2, 2000 and then stabbed her to death on the fourth floor of their building, Brown said.
Burton then took the woman’s keys and stole items from her apartment, Brown said.
Gunmen on bicycles injure two in Far Rockaway crowd
FAR ROCKAWAY — Two men were shot by gun-wielding bicyclists who fired into a crowd Sunday, police said.
The victims, ages 21 and 31, were standing with others in front of 57-15 Shore Front Parkway in Far Rockaway at about 4:40 a.m. when two men on bicycles fired several rounds at the group, police said.
The 21-year-old was struck in the left hand and the 31-year old was shot in the left forearm and left leg, police said. Both were taken to Peninsula General Hospital and listed in stable condition.
Police were investigating.
Tot seriously hurt after hit by car on 130th Avenue
SPRINGFIELD GARDENS — A 4-year-old boy was seriously injured Tuesday evening when he ran into traffic while playing in the street, police said. No summonses were issued to the driver who struck him.
The accident happened around 5:15 p.m. Tuesday at 130th Avenue near 222nd Street when the child, who was not identified by police, stepped into the street from between two parked cars, police said.
The 4-year-old was taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital, where police said the child was likely to die.
No summonses were issued as of Tuesday, police said.
Pit bull shot dead in Queens Village
QUEENS VILLAGE — A pit bull was shot to death Tuesday by the father of a man the animal was attacking, police said.
The dog was shot by the licensed pistol holder who came to the aid of his son and shot the dog once in the head at the corner of 211th Street and 91st Avenue at about 9:05 p.m. in Queens Village, police said.
The dog died at the scene.
Ambulance-minivan crash in Woodside hurts five people
WOODSIDE — Five people were treated at hospitals last Thursday when an ambulance collided with a minivan on Queens Boulevard, police said.
At about 10:50 a.m., a Dodge Caravan was traveling east on Queens Boulevard and an EMS ambulance was south-bound on 69th Street when the two collided, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman.
The ambulance then struck a BMW which was stopped at a red light on 69th Street, Chew said. No pedestrians were hit.
The drivers and one passenger of the private vehicles were taken to St. John’s and Elmhurst General hospitals with minor injuries, Chew said.
Two EMS workers were also taken to Elmhurst General Hospital with minor injuries, Chew said. No summonses were issued at the time of the accident.
Police did not indicate whether the ambulance was on a call before the collision.
Ridgewood man dies after stabbed in the chest
LONG ISLAND CITY — A Ridgewood man was stabbed to death last Thursday following an argument with two unidentified men, police said.
Candito Arenas, 22, of 60-13 Putnam Ave. in Ridgewood, was stabbed several times in the chest at about 5:25 a.m. on the corner of 31st Street and 36th Avenue in Long Island City, police said.
On July 20, police arrested Elmer Ramirez, 23 of 30-99 12th St. in Astoria and charged him with murder in the second degree, police said.
Arenas was taken to Elmhurst Hospital where he was initially listed in serious condition, but at 7:52 a.m. he died from his wounds, police said.
2 rob Ridgewood station, hit attendant with gun
RIDGEWOOD — Two men robbed a gas station on Metropolitan Avenue Saturday, injuring the attendant and making off with $1,800, police said.
The robbers entered the station at 60-04 Metropolitan Ave. in Ridgewood at about 4:25 p.m. One pointed a gun and demanded money, police said.
The 47-year-old station attendant was hit over the head with the gun, suffering a minor injury, police said. He declined medical attention, police said.
Police were investigating.
Man dies after jumping from Queensborough Bridge
QUEENSBORO BRIDGE — An unidentified man jumped to his death from the Queens side of the Queensborough Bridge Tuesday, police said.
The man was seen at about 4:30 p.m. jumping from the lower level of the bridge, police said. He landed on the rocks near the shoreline and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Young man shot dead in East Elmhurst dispute
EAST ELMHURST — A 26-year-old man was shot dead and his father was injured as he ran after his son’s killer on Northern Boulevard in East Elmhurst Friday, police said.
After a dispute near the intersection of 106th Street and Northern Boulevard, Paul Massard, 26, was shot in the chest by an unidentified person, said Detective Carolyn Chew, a police spokeswoman. It was not known what started the dispute.
The victim’s father, also named Paul Massard, 54, ran after the shooter, who shot the elder Massard in the arm, Chew said.
The father lost the shooter after a chase of about 50 feet, Chew said.
The father then grabbed his mortally wounded son and drove him in a yellow Mercedes to Elmhurst General Hospital, Chew said.
The 26-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital, Chew said. His father was in stable condition. Police did not recover a handgun at the scene.
Richmond Hill man arrested in robberies, sex attacks
RICHMOND HILL — Detectives from the Queens Special Victims Unit and 102nd Precinct arrested a Richmond Hill man Tuesday in what the detectives described as a pattern of sex attacks and robberies in September and October, police said.
Victor Arais, 33, of 102-33 Atlantic Ave. in Richmond Hill was arrested after one of his alleged robbery victims, Queens Executive District Attorney Gregory Lasak, ran after him, according to Newsday.
Arais was charged with two counts of rape, and one count each of sodomy, robbery and burglary, police said.
The first incident occurred in September in the 115th Precinct, which covers East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Corona. The second was in October in the 102nd Precinct, which covers Kew Gardens, Richmond Hill, Woodhaven and Ozone Park.
Teen punched in Ridgewood in anti-gay confrontation
RIDGEWOOD — A 15-year-old was accosted by a group of men who made anti-gay remarks to him Monday, police said.
The teen was confronted at about 2:30 a.m. in front of 64-02 Palmetto St., police said. The assailants punched him in the face and fled the scene. The victim declined medical attention, police said.
Police were searching for the men.
