BAYSIDE — A gas main break Monday afternoon disrupted construction work at PS 41 in Bayside but did not seriously disturb the surrounding area, a police officer at the scene said.
The officer said the operator of a construction vehicle doing work on the school at 35th Avenue and 215th Street accidentally broke the gas main at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.
While emergency vehicles and fire trucks stood by in case of complications, no residents were evacuated, the officer said.
There were no children in the school at the time, he said, and school staff was evacuated from the building during the repairs.
Woman, 19, raped by teenager in Flushing alleyway: Cops
FLUSHING — A 19-year-old woman was raped by a teenager in a Flushing alleyway early Monday morning, police said.
The victim was approached by her attacker from behind about 1:30 a.m. and threatened with a knife before she was forced into the alley and raped and sodomized, police said. Police did not release the exact location of the attack.
The woman was taken to Flushing Hospital for evaluation, police said.
NYPD to use computers to give out parking tickets
CITYWIDE — The New York City Police Department has announced it will soon begin testing new hand-held computers to issue parking tickets.
The pilot program, which is to begin in early fall, will evaluate the overall effectiveness of the ticketing system under working conditions. The idea is to use computer technology to reduce illegible, inaccurate or missing data on parking tickets. Such errors can render a ticket invalid.
“The use of these computerized devices is another step in the increased use of technology in the NYPD,” Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said. “We expect that these hand-held computers will greatly enhance the efficiency and accountability of our traffic enforcement operations.”
111th Precinct warns of thefts at Little Neck fitness center
LITTLE NECK — The 111th Police Precinct is seeking to warn customers of the Bally’s fitness club in Little Neck about a series of robberies there, Community Affairs Officer Anthony Lombardi said.
Lombardi said there has been a series of robberies at the gym at the intersection of Horace Harding Expressway and Marathon Parkway.
Patrons should be cautious when leaving belongings in gym lockers, Lombardi said. Most of the crimes have been theft of credit cards from wallets left in the gym lockers, he said.
Homeowner tied up in Jamaica Estates rob
JAMAICA ESTATES — A trio of robbers pushed their way into a Jamaica Estates home last week and stole $1,000, police said.
The robbery occurred at 83-21 188th St. when a man pretending to be a delivery person knocked on the door, police said. When the homeowner answered, police said, two other men and a women pushed their way inside and tied up the homeowner before taking the money.
The incident happened at about 1:30 p.m. last Thursday, police said.
No one was injured and police were investigating.
Man found shot dead in van in Queens Village
QUEENS VILLAGE — A 20-year-old man was found dead with two gunshot wounds to the head in a van in Queens Village Monday night, police said.
The victim, whose name was not released, was found after police responded to a 911 call that shots were fired near 214-14 111th Road, police said.
Police found the man when they arrived at about 10 p.m., police said.
Police were investigating.
Rosedale man charged in Brooklyn murder
ROSEDALE — A Rosedale man was charged with second-degree murder Friday for allegedly shooting and killing a man in Brooklyn, police said.
Wallinford Reid, 29, of 240-37 142nd Ave., was arrested and charged with killing Laquan Price, 23, of Brooklyn. The suspect was walking along New Lots Avenue in Brooklyn with a friend at the time of the shooting, police said.
Police accused Reid of shooting Price four times in the head Friday night. Price was taken to Brookdale Hospital where he later died.
Boy says he was victim of sex attack in Jamaica
JAMAICA — A 12-year-old said he was sodomized by a group of other boys Friday night in Jamaica, police said.
The victim, whose name was not released, said he was approached by five boys he knew, ages 8 to 14, at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, police said.
The victim said one of the boys sodomized him while the others held him down, police said.
The alleged attackers, whose names were not released, were arrested Saturday, police said.
4 arrested on coke charges at Forest Hills residence
FOREST HILLS — Four Queens residents were arrested on charges of selling cocaine to undercover police officers on several occasions in May and June, the Queens district attorney said.
Camilo Meza, 22, Cristina Lopez, 20, and Isaias Rivera, 19, all of 108-26 63rd Drive, and Jose Diaz, 30, of 39-17 91st St., were charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, DA Richard Brown said.
Meza allegedly met an undercover officer several times after the agent phoned to sell “Bazooka,” referring to cocaine. After five consecutive purchases were allegedly made, Queens North narcotics officers with a search warrant found 17 packages of cocaine, four plastic bags with cocaine and one foil package of cocaine at the 63rd Drive location, Brown said.
Transit worker killed after falling on G tracks
ELMHURST — A 49-year-old transit worker was killed early Tuesday morning after falling onto the tracks at a train station in Elmhurst, police said.
The victim was electrocuted at about 2 a.m. Tuesday when he fell and hit the third rail with his hand at the G Train station at Grand Avenue and Queens Boulevard, police said
Elmhurst man arrested in early-morning assault
ELMHURST — Three days after a man was hit over the head with a bottle, police arrested a 28-year-old Elmhurst resident and charged him in the attack.
The assault happened on Saturday around 5:30 a.m., when a 38-year-old man was found by police lying in the street near Lamamont Avenue and 91st Street, struck over the head with a bottle, police said. The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition Saturday night, police said.
On Wednesday, police arrested Juan Bustamante of Elmhurst, and charged him with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
Man threatens teller, robs bank in Blissville
BLISSVILLE — A Blissville bank was robbed Tuesday afternoon by a man who threatened a teller with a can of Mace, police said.
The man entered the Independence Savings Bank at 51-13 31st St. at about 2 p.m. Tuesday and passed a note to the bank teller announcing a robbery and produced a can of Mace, police said. The man then fled the scene with an undetermined amount of money, police said.
No one was injured in the incident.
Elmhurst street corner fight ends in shooting by police
ELMHURST — A police sergeant fatally shot a man on a street corner Wednesday morning when the man began to assault another person with a baseball bat, police said.
The shooting happened around 4:15 a.m. when officers from the anti-crime division saw a fight on the corner of Britton Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue, police said.
As the officers tried to break it up, the assailant struck a victim with a baseball bat, police said.
One of the officers, a sergeant, opened fire on the man wielding the bat, striking him twice, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Police said the sergeant was taken to St. John’s Hospital and treated for a back injury and trauma.
2 robbers with guns hit Forest Hills dealership
FOREST HILLS — Two gunmen robbed a Forest Hills car dealership and stole jewelry and cash before fleeing in two cars from the dealership Sunday morning, police said.
The thieves entered the used-car dealership at 74-16 Queens Blvd. at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday and announced a robbery before stealing an undetermined amount of cash, jewelry, and the two Lexus cars, police said.
2 men arrested, charged in Ridgewood shooting
RIDGEWOOD — Two men were arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly shooting a man in the head in Ridgewood, police said.
Andrew Deleon, 19, of 1156 Gates Ave. in Ridgewood, and Harry McLaughlin, 20, whose address was not released, were charged with assault in the incident, police said.
The pair allegedly shot a man in the head at 61-19 Bleeker St., police said. Deleon was also charged with criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
The victim was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in critical condition, police said.
Steinway construction worker in critical condition after fall
STEINWAY — A 21-year-old worker for a Steinway Street construction company survived a 10-story fall off a Manhattan building Monday afternoon, police said.
The victim was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition after falling off the building at 2 East Broadway, police said. He was working for Acura Restoration Inc. of Steinway.
Police said the victim was working on the ledge of the building and fell when he lost his footing at about 2:15 p.m. Monday.
Prisoner escapes from hospital in Astoria, caught later: Police
ASTORIA — A female prisoner undergoing medical tests at Astoria General Hospital escaped Monday afternoon, police said.
The prisoner, Kathleen Dalto, 38, was later apprehended at about midnight in Brooklyn, police said, by an officer who recognized her from police reports.
Charges were pending against Dalto as of presstime.
Teen shot in foot in Corona dispute
CORONA — A teenager was shot in the foot during a dispute in Corona early Tuesday morning, police said.
The victim, 17, was shot in his left foot at 97th Street and 37th Avenue after an argument with someone he knew, police said.
The teen was taken to Elmhurst Hospital in stable condition, police said.
