Borough President Claire Shulman and Democratic Borough Presidential candidate Helen Marshall stood on the steps of Borough Hall this Monday afternoon to endorse the Mayoral candidacy of City Public Advocate Mark Green.
"Green and Ferrer are both qualified candidates, but Im adding my voice to those who are endorsing Mark Green", Helen Marshall said. "Mark Green understands our need for affordable housing, better public education, and more community policing", Borough President Shulman added.
Green asked the audience to consider four questions:
– Which candidate has citywide experience?
– Which candidate can bring the diverse elements of this city together?
– Which candidate has the best plans for education, housing, and police?
– Which candidate has the best plan to rebuild and renew New York?
Green pledged to work with the Mayor to provide a seamless transition. But he said that changing the election law in order to overturn term limits would be wrong, as would the appointment of Mayor Giuliani as a development czar.
Over the past few days, a large number of Queens public officials have endorsed Green. They have been following the lead of Democratic County Leader Tom Manton, who endorsed Green only fifteen hours after the primary polls closed last Tuesday.
During the past week, Ferrer has been endorsed by Queens Councilman (and Council Speaker) Peter Vallone. Most of those who endorsed or worked for Vallone have followed suit and are now working for Ferrer. Those who worked for the failed Mayoral campaign of Alan Hevesi, including the Queens Democratic Organization, have for the most part endorsed the campaign of Mark Green.
Green and Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer are competing in the Democratic runoff election on October 11th. Polls for the runoff a week from Thursday will be open from 6 AM to 9 PM.
