FLUSHING — An early Monday morning fire at 41-55 Bowne St. where five people were trapped is being called suspicious after a potentially flammable liquid was identified at the fire’s source, a Fire Department spokesman said Tuesday.
An occupant of the apartment where the fire began about 2:40 a.m., and three adults and a child in the apartment above were rescued by firefighters who battled heavy flames and smoke to reach them. The first resident was found unconscious.
Four of the residents were brought to New York Hospital Medical Center of Queens in Flushing, one with serious burns and three with smoke inhalation who were listed in stable condition, the spokesman said.
Another victim was taken to Flushing Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, the spokesman said.
The fire was still under investigation Tuesday.
FRESH MEADOWS — A St. Albans man was arrested Monday after he allegedly attempted to rob the Ridgewood Savings Bank at 205-11 Hillside Ave, police said.
Police arrested Lawrence Thweet, 52, of 104-12 204 St., three blocks from the bank shortly after the attempted robbery, police said.
Thweet entered the bank about noon last Thursday and allegedly passed a note to a teller demanding money, police said. The teller refused and the suspect, who was carrying a cane and walked with a limp, fled, police said.
FLUSHING — A 19-year-old man was found dead in a vehicle at World’s Fair Marina about 10:25 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Police did not give the victim’s name or cause of death. The incident was under investigation.
LAURELTON — A 20-year-old man died about 45 minutes after he was found shot in the torso outside his Laurelton home Tuesday night, police said.
Karim Titus, of 221-29 134th Rd. was discovered in front of his house about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 8:15 p.m., police said.
There were no arrests and the motive was still unknown Wednesday morning, police said.

RICHMOND HILL — Officers were investigating a letter containing anti-Semitic remarks reported Dec. 26 about 11 a.m., police said.
The incident occurred within the 102 Precinct and was being investigated.
QUEENS VILLAGE — An 80-year-old woman was reported missing by her son last Thursday after disappearing from her residence at 145-15 176th St. about 10:30 a.m. Dec. 31, police said.
Police said Alma Bennette left for work in her car and has not been heard from since. The woman was driving a 1987 Chevy Malibu.
SOUTH JAMAICA— A 27-year-old man was arrested on charges of menacing and harassment after he allegedly attempted to strike an off-duty police officer about 5:10 p.m. Sunday in the vicinity of 148th Street, police said.
Mandell Deck, whose address was not given, was shot once in the shoulder by the officer and taken to Jamaica Hospital after his arrest, police said. The off-duty officer was not identified.
QUEENS VILLAGE — A woman was found dead in a residence at 133-68 231st St. last Thursday, police said.
The body of Lorraine Grannick, 57, was discovered about 7 p.m. with no signs of trauma or criminalitt, police said. The medical examiner said initial autopsy results to deterimine cause of death were inconclusive.
RICHMOND HILL — A 20-year-old man was stabbed in the torso by an unknown suspect at 115-12 Mayfair Rd. about 1:40 a.m. last Thursday.
The victim, who was not identified, was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, police said.
ELMHURST — Two suspects were arrested for allegedly attempting to rob and stab a man at Macintosh Avenue and Astoria Boulevard about 4:30 a.m. last Thursday, police said.
Arrested were Enrique Canaille, 24, of 56-10 94th St. in Elmhurst, and Eduardo Geminis, 17, 103-17 Ave. in Corona, police said.
The suspects allegedly tried to rob a 48-year-old man, stabbed him, then fled empty-handed. About 4:40 a.m., the same suspects allegedly robbed a 21-year-old man at knife point, took his wallet and fled, according to police. The suspects were later arrested and they face charges of robbery and assault, police said.
FOREST HILLS — A 53-year-old man was struck by a car about 7 p.m. last Thursday while crossing Woodhaven Boulevard, police said.
The man, whose name was not released, was taken to St. John’s Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Police said no criminality was suspected in the incident.
ASTORIA — A 29-year-old man was shot twice in the leg about 6:30 a.m. last Thursday at 24-10 34th Ave., police said.
The victim was taken to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and was listed in stable condition, police said. An investigation into the incident was continuing.
MASPETH — Police responded to 87th Street and Union Turnpike to investigate a suspicious device reported about 12:35 p.m. last Thursday.
The bomb squad removed the device for further inspection. No arrest was made.
MANHASSET — A doctor at North Shore-Long Island Jewish Research Institute was killed Monday after being struck by a car while attempting to cross a Manhasset street, police said.
Dr. Santosh Varma, 70, was pronounced dead at North Shore University Hospital at about 6:30 p.m.
Nassau police said Varma, a research scientist at the institute and an assistant professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, was crossing Community Drive at about 5:50 p.m. when she was struck by the car.
Police said the incident was an accident and no charges were issued.
