A Corona teenager was fatally struck in a tragedy that allegedly involved three hit-and-run drivers. The incident occurred on Roosevelt Avenue at 111th Street around 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, January 18.
She was first struck by a car traveling eastbound which fled the scene. As friends and bystanders rushed over to aid Natalie Guzman, 18, a second car, heading westbound, then careened into her and sped away.
According to reports, Guzman, the mother of a 15-month-old daughter, Laritza, was attempting to cross Roosevelt Avenue with a friend at 5:30 a.m. after buying a bag of potato chips at an all-night grocery store only two blocks from her home.
No one witnessed the first car as it struck, but the passersby who rushed to her aid had to scramble to avoid a second car, described as a sport utility vehicle, as it barreled toward them, its lights off, crushing Guzmans limp body.
Guzmans mother, Miriam Toribio said she had given her daughter some money on Saturday night so she could spend time with friends.
Reportedly, Guzman had been at the Los Primos Tournament Billiards pool hall before she went to the O & R Grocery store to buy the potato chips.
According to reports, Toribio believes that the death of her only daughter was intentional, and that the first vehicle returned to run over Guzman again. One witness alleges that the SUV made a u-turn, but police have no evidence of this as of yet.
There have been no arrests made in connection with the incident.
Initially, police believed there had been two drivers, but they are currently looking for three different vehicles: a black, four-door sedan; a white four-door sedan; and a black SUV.
The girl with Guzman at the time of the accident was not injured.
In light of the tragedy, Toribio has taken custody of her granddaughter. Toribio is unsure as yet how she will pay for the burial costs, but the family hopes to donate Guzmans organs.
Guzman, a single mother, had been employed part-time as a waitress as she worked toward her high school equivalency diploma.
She emigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic with her mother while still a child.
Guzman was rushed to Elmhurst Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival at approximately 6 a.m.
